TREE PLANTING EXERCISE AT MOUNT MARY BASIC SCHOOL

As part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and instill the culture of tree planting among school children, a tree planting exercise was organized at Mount Mary Basic School in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality on 25th June, 2026.
The program commenced with an address by the Municipal Coordinating Director, who emphasized the importance of trees in sustaining life and protecting the environment. He highlighted the numerous benefits of trees, including their role in improving air quality, preventing soil erosion, providing shade, and combating climate change.
The Coordinating Director reminded participants of their collective responsibility to nurture and protect the environment. He encouraged the students to serve as ambassadors of the trees planted, ensuring that they are properly cared for and protected. In stressing the importance of environmental conservation, he stated, “The day the last tree dies, the last man also dies,” underscoring the critical relationship between human survival and the preservation of nature.
The Headteacher of Mount Mary Basic School expressed appreciation to the organizers and assured all present that the school would take proper care of the trees to ensure their healthy growth and long-term survival.
The symbolic planting of the first tree was carried out by the Municipal Coordinating Director, officially launching the exercise. Various species of trees were planted on the school compound, including Mahogany, Royal Palm, and Cashew trees.
Students, teachers, and officials actively participated in the planting exercise, demonstrating their commitment to environmental protection and beautification of the school environment.
The tree planting exercise was successful and served as an important platform for educating students on environmental stewardship. The participation of municipal authorities, various security agencies, forestry commission, media, school management, and students reflected a shared commitment to preserving the environment for future generations. The event ended with a renewed pledge by all stakeholders to nurture the planted trees and promote sustainable environmental practices within the municipality.
