The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly on 18th May, 2023 inaugurated a nine (9) member interim management committee to steer the affairs of the Assembly until the district Assembly election is held. The Eastern Regional Minister, the Sector Minister for Local Government Decentralization and Rural Development.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon Simon Kwaku Tetteh in his welcome address thanked both the Regional Minister and the Sector Minister for making time out of their busy schedule to be part of the program. The MCE said the District Assembly election in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality deviated from the National one as a result of a court case filed against the Electoral Commission of Ghana in 2012 hence changing the calendar from the National one. He said the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly inaugurated its 7th Assembly on 19th January 2019 while the national one was held in October 2019 hence the term of the 7th Assembly came to an end on 18th January 2023. Hon Simon said, the electoral commission has put measures in place to run the election to fulfill their constitutional mandate but was slapped with a court injunction by two individuals within the Municipality to restrain them from conducting the election which created a vacuum. To fill the vacuum, the MCE said the Assembly has done some consultation with some stakeholders in the Municipality, and per the local government ACT 2016 (ACT 936) Section 6 subsection 3 stated that the president is the only person who may appoint an interim management committee to perform the function of the Assembly an event the electoral commission is unable to conduct the District Assembly election. In this direction, the Assembly has appealed to His Excellency President Nana Akuffo Addo through the local government Minister to appoint a nine-member committee to perform the functions of the Assembly until the election is conducted for which he has approved. Hon Tetteh took the opportunity to mention some projects the Assembly has done with the urban development grant (UDG). He requested the Local Government Minister Hon. Daniel Kwaku Botwe to use the UDG 4 and 5 to repair the main road from Dorhetso to Kpong which is in a deplorable state.
Speaking on the approval of the Nine (9) member committee, Hon. Daniel Kwaku Botwe said, his office has received some letters emanating from the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly and the overlord his royal majesty Nene Sakite II Kono of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area and the president of the Eastern regional house of chief requesting to shift the assembly election to meet the national one. Hon Daniel Kweku Botwe said, upon receiving these letters, he forwarded them to the president for his consideration and approval which he has done.
