SUSTAINABLE FISHING AND PREVENTION OF CHILD LABOR

The Fisheries Commission on 14th August 2025, organized a stakeholder engagement on sustainable fishing at Kpong. The engagement brought together some institutions such as Ghana Health Service, National Disaster Management Organization, Police Service, Military, Agric Directorate, Opinion Leaders and Ghana Water Company to sensitize fishermen on how to practice sustainable fishing and prevent child labor.
Speaking on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Selorm Tibu the Municipal Coordinating Director stated that fishing and aquaculture is a vital source of income for many within the Kpong community. However, it has faced a challenge of bad fishing practices and unethical involvement of child labor hence it is prudent to highlight the sustainable fishing practices and the prevention of child labor to ensure that the people enjoy the natural resources provided to them while sustaining it for future generations.
Mr Patrick Apenteng Head of Fisheries Commission Akosombo, in his delivery indicated that, the Fisheries Commission has a mandate to ensure a long term conservation of aquaculture and water bodies, and this is done through preparing comprehensive plans for conservation, monitoring of fishing activities and addressing complaints from stakeholders. He said the Commission has a responsibility to educate all fishermen who practiced bad fishing methods such as use of light, use of chemicals and the use of dynamites. Mr. Apenteng said these unapproved method of fishing are harmful and prohibited because the use of light can disrupt the natural behavior and habitat for fishes, whiles the use of chemicals for fishing contaminate water bodies and is harmful for human and aquatic life. The use of dynamites is destructive and can devastate the entire ecosystem for fishes Mr. Apenteng said.
The Public Relation officer for Volta River Authority (VRA) has expressed concerns about debris in the river, which affects their operations and aquatic ecosystems. He said, the people in the Kpong community must adopt responsible waste management practices and avoid the use of the river as refuse dumps.
The Municipal Coordinating Director in his closing remarks stated that sustainable fishing and prevention of child labor are interlinked goals that require concerted effort from all stakeholders. He added that responsible fishing practices will sustain our water bodies for future generations, while educating our children will make them responsible and great scholars in future. Mr Selorm said, it is our collective responsibility to preserve these resources, recognizing the intrinsic value they hold for our well-being.

MCE CHAIRS MAIDEN MEETING OF RECONSTITUTED MUNICIPAL EDUCATION OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

On Wednesday, 20th August 2025, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly held a special program at the Mini Conference Hall to inaugurate the reconstituted Municipal Education Oversight Committee (MEOC). The maiden meeting of the new committee was chaired by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. John Atteh Matey.
The gathering, which brought together key stakeholders in the education sector, marked the beginning of renewed efforts aimed at enhancing supervision, coordination, and development of education within the municipality. The reconstitution of the MEOC is in line with government policy to ensure that educational oversight structures remain active, responsive, and capable of addressing the evolving challenges within the sector.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Matey underscored the critical role of the committee in shaping the educational landscape of the municipality. He emphasized that education remains a top priority for the Assembly, as it forms the foundation for human resource development, socio-economic growth, and long-term community transformation. He further called on members of the committee to work with dedication, unity of purpose, and a results-driven approach in discharging their mandate.
The meeting provided a platform to discuss key issues affecting education in Lower Manya Krobo, including school infrastructure, teaching and learning resources, teacher performance, and community participation in education delivery. Members also deliberated on strategies to strengthen supervision, promote accountability, and improve the quality of education at all levels.
Chief among the objectives of the reconstituted MEOC is to support the Municipal Education Directorate in monitoring performance indicators, coordinating interventions, and ensuring that government policies and programs are effectively implemented to benefit schools and learners across the municipality.
The re-launch of the MEOC signals the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind in accessing quality education. Hon. Matey assured participants that the Assembly would continue to mobilize resources and foster partnerships with stakeholders to address challenges confronting the sector.
The meeting ended with members reaffirming their collective resolve to work diligently in support of educational growth and to create an enabling environment for pupils and students in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality to excel academically.

MCE PAYS COURTESY CALL ON AKOSOMBO DIVISIONAL POLICE COMMANDER

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Hon. John Atteh Matey, as part of his active duty engagements, paid a surprise courtesy call on the Akosombo Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Doris Grant, at her office in Akosombo.
The unannounced visit, though brief, was marked by fruitful discussions centered on the need to deepen collaboration between the Municipal Assembly and the Police Service in promoting peace, security, and law and order within the municipality and the broader Akosombo Police Division in the Eastern Region.
During the interaction, Hon. Matey emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to working closely with the Police Command to ensure the safety of residents, particularly in the face of emerging security challenges. He underscored the fact that peace and stability remain essential ingredients for social and economic development, and therefore pledged the continuous support of the Assembly toward policing efforts in the municipality.
Chief Superintendent Doris Grant, on her part, warmly welcomed the MCE and expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the thoughtful visit. She noted that the gesture was not only an honour to her office but also a sign of the strong partnership between the Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Police Service. She assured Hon. Matey of her unwavering commitment and that of her officers to upholding law and order, safeguarding lives, and protecting property across their operational jurisdiction.
Both leaders concluded their discussions with a shared resolve to intensify collaboration through joint strategies and community-centered initiatives aimed at preventing crime and enhancing public safety.

MCE COMMENDS PROGRESS ON SALOSI CULVERT PROJECT

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Lower Manya Krobo, Hon. John Atteh Matey, has expressed great satisfaction with the steady progress of work on the ongoing Salosi Culvert project. The initiative is designed to restore the vital link road in the community, which has long suffered disruption due to the collapse of the original culvert.
The project, which is being undertaken by Millimate Construction Works, was officially handed over to the contractor by the MCE less than a month ago. Since then, visible progress has been made, with construction activities advancing steadily in line with the agreed timelines.
Speaking during a visit to the site, Hon. Matey commended the contractor for the commitment and professionalism demonstrated so far. He emphasized that the rehabilitation of the culvert is of immense importance to the municipality, as the restored road will not only improve transportation and accessibility for residents but also boost economic activity and enhance social connectivity in the area.
The MCE further expressed optimism that, judging by the pace of work, the project would be completed within the stipulated contract period. He assured the public that the Assembly would continue to monitor the works closely to ensure quality and value for money.
The Salosi Culvert project forms part of the Municipal Assembly’s broader efforts to improve road infrastructure across communities and to address key challenges that hinder mobility and development.

TSLEDOM FEEDER ROAD PROJECT IN LOWER MANYA KROBO MUNICIPAL

On the 16th August,2025 Engineer Godwin Kaleshie began Tsledom feeder road project which is a Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly (LMKMA) priority intervention Project to improve all-weather access for residents, farmers, traders and schoolchildren in and around Tsledom. The road links the community to adjoining settlements and municipal service centers, facilitating movement of farm produce to markets and access to health and education services. The project aligns with the Assembly’s Medium-Term Development Plan and Ghana’s rural accessibility objectives under the Department of Feeder Roads (DFR). The Pictures below show ongoing work.

GHANA RICE PRODUCTION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (GRIP) DEMONSTRATION PLOT AT OKWENYA

The Agric Department of lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly in collaboration with Ghana Rice Production Improvement Project (GRIP) under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project is situated in Lower Manya Krobo District, specifically in the Okwenya community.
The farm demonstration plot involves the Okwenya Rice Farmers Association, with rice varieties identified as AGRA and Legon 1. Transplanting on the plot was carried out on 16th June 2025.
The project is funded by JICA-GRIP and supported by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), the Eastern Regional Agriculture Department (RAD), and the Lower Manya Krobo District Agriculture Department.
This initiative demonstrates efforts to enhance rice production in Ghana through improved farming practices, capacity building, and collaborative partnerships between international donors and local institutions.

NATIONAL SANITATION DAY IN LOWER MANYA KROBO MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

As part of the nationwide effort to promote environmental cleanliness and public hygiene, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly observed the National Sanitation Day on Saturday, 2nd August 2025. The event aimed to encourage communal participation in waste management and cleanliness across the municipality.
Hon. Martey John, the Municipal Chief Executive of Lower Manya Krobo, played a leading role in the day’s activities. His involvement included:
• Mobilizing Community Members: Hon. Martey John personally engaged community leaders, youth groups, and market associations to ensure full participation.
• Public Sensitization: He addressed the gathering at the forecourt of the Assembly, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness to public health and urban development.
• Active Participation: The MCE took part in the clean-up exercise at key locations including the Agormanya Market area, Zongo Junction, and surrounding streets.
• Inspection and Motivation: He toured various clean-up zones, encouraging volunteers and sanitation officers, and ensuring the provision of necessary logistics such as gloves, brooms, and waste bins.
The presence and leadership of the MCE greatly motivated residents to actively participate in the exercise. The activity resulted in the clearing of major drains, removal of refuse heaps, and the general improvement of sanitation within the municipality.
Hon. Martey John’s direct involvement in the National Sanitation Day activities demonstrated his commitment to promoting a clean and healthy environment in Lower Manya Krobo. His leadership contributed to the overall success of the event and further reinforced the Assembly’s sanitation and hygiene agenda.

Annual Workshop on Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Management Plan

On Wednesday, July 11, 2025, key environmental stakeholders convened at the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly Hall for the annual workshop on Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP). The one-day workshop brought together representatives from the Volta River Authority (VRA), the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), environmental sanitation officers, and community opinion leaders.
The primary objective of the workshop was to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing on strategies to mitigate environmental risks and improve emergency response mechanisms. The specific aims of the program were to:
• Minimize environmental risks through proactive planning.
• Identify potential emergency scenarios and develop comprehensive response plans.
• Clarify the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in emergency and environmental management.
• Promote the implementation of effective strategies to prevent and manage disasters, particularly in areas surrounding dam sites.
The workshop featured presentations and interactive discussions focused on practical approaches to environmental risk management. Special attention was given to emergency preparedness in relation to dam infrastructure, considering the potential impact of environmental hazards in such areas. Stakeholders assessed current plans, shared insights, and discussed areas for improvement in the execution of both the EPP and EMP.
A representative from the Volta River Authority led a session to review the existing program schedule and address concerns raised by participants, ensuring alignment with ongoing risk management efforts.
The event concluded successfully with a closing address by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who emphasized the importance of continued stakeholder collaboration. This was followed by a vote of thanks and a closing prayer, marking the end of a productive and insightful workshop.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING HELD AT THE LOWER MANYA KROBO MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

July 10th, 2025 a General Assembly Meeting was held at the Assembly’s Conference Hall to deliberate on some important matters that impact the Assembly’s administration and development of the Municipality. The discussions focused on key issues such as, revenue mobilization, sanitation and health, education, social intervention programs, road construction, and infrastructure.
Briefing the house, the Business Advisory Center (BAC) Director Mr. Edmond Addo stated that ‘Business in The Box’ program which started in 2023 will end in 2027. The program is set to create employment and income opportunity for over two hundred and fifty thousand (250,000) youths in the Municipality. He therefore advise honorable members to encourage the youths in their electoral areas to register when the time is due. The Municipal Director for Agriculture, in his term indicated that Feed Ghana Program by the government is to ensure food security in the country and registration of farmers on the program has commenced. However, interested farmers are required to belong to a Farmer Based Organizations of fifteen (15) to forty (40) membership.
The Municipal Chief Executive Hon. John Atter Martey in his address provided more details on the key issues stated above. According to Hon Martey some interventions that will be implemented to increase revenue mobilization will include, update of the revenue database, organizing stakeholder engagements, implementation of internal control measures to check leakages, reviving the collection of permit for temporal and permanent structures and prosecution of offenders. For health and sanitation issues, he said the Assembly will procure sanitation tools for public schools and health facilities, procurement of refuse containers to be placed at vantage points and construction of CHIPS compound at places such as Amedeka. Hon. John Martey stated that education is a priority to him and therefore, he will institute MCEs best BECE student’s award, expand the school feeding program in the Municipality, and students with disability will receive assisting tools and technology for their education. Elaborating on the social intervention program by the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the National Apprenticeship Program will cover the training cost, machines and monthly stipends for apprentice. Some infrastructure projects to be undertaken includes, construction of a three unit classroom block at Yokuyim, construction of a CHIPS compound at Amedeka among just to mention a few.
Some other issues that was addressed by the MCE has to do with the liabilities he inherited as the MCE and the way forward. The liabilities include road contracts such as the construction of Atua to Adjikpo road, reconstruction of Nuaso to Kpong Quarters, just to mention a few. He indicated that the Assembly is owing the contractors of these projects and the Assembly is making funds available to settle these depts. The MCE proceeded to mention recommendations made by the Executive Committee for the general house to approve and these include, fixing of malfunctioning streetlights, Establishment of Municipal Commodity Satellite Market, finding ways of control stray animals and fixing of pipelines in the Municipality.

REPORT ON THE LAUNCH OF “TREE FOR LIFE (T4L)” – MAKE GHANA GREEN PROJECT 2025 DAY CELEBRATIONS

As part of the national “Make Ghana Green Project 2025” initiative, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly officially launched the “Tree for Life (141)” Forestation Initiative on Thursday, 12th June 2025. The event took place at the premises of Akro Senior High Technical School at 11:00 a.m.
The Make Ghana Green Project was originally launched on 21st March 2025 by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana. The initiative aims to mobilize stakeholders across the country for a massive tree planting exercise, with a particular focus on restoring areas degraded by illegal mining activities and promoting long-term environmental sustainability.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. John Martey Atteh, delivered a keynote address in which he encouraged students and community members to take active roles in tree planting activities. He emphasized the critical role trees play in human survival, referencing the well-known adage, “When the last tree dies, the last man dies.” He further urged the youth, especially students, to stay away from drug abuse, particularly the misuse of over-the-counter medications (commonly referred to as “RED” medicines).
Also present at the event was the Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Tetteh, who echoed the sentiments of the MCE by stressing the importance of afforestation as a national duty and a critical environmental responsibility.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Hon. John Martey Atteh, who, on behalf of the President of the Republic, expressed appreciation to all participants for their commitment to the green initiative. He commended the efforts of students, teachers, Assembly officials, and other stakeholders for their support in making the Make Ghana Green Project 2025 Day Celebrations a success within the municipality.
The event marked a significant step in promoting environmental consciousness and youth involvement in sustainable practices across the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality
