THE COMMISSIONING OF THE KPONG WHARF FISH MARKET

The commissioning of the Kpong Wharf Fish Market was held on Wednesday, 5th November 2025 at Kpong Wharf in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality on the theme: ‘Empowering Fisher Folks for Sustainable Livelihood-Nurturing the Hands that Feed Us’. The project forms part of efforts to improve the working conditions and economic activities of fisher folks within the community. The construction of the market was financed by the Volta River Authority (VRA) in collaboration with the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly.
Hon. Raymond Gborson Assembly Member for Kpong-Ahundzo commended both VRA and the Municipal Assembly for their collaborative effort in delivering the project. He further appealed for the full completion of remaining works on the facility and encouraged the fisher folks to maintain the market to ensure its longevity and sustainability.
The representative from the Volta River Authority highlighted the Authority’s continuous support to communities within its operational zone, stressing that the safety and wellbeing of the fisher folks are of great concern to VRA. He emphasized the importance of relocating fisher folks from the river banks to a safer and more hygienic designated trading center. He reiterated that the project aligns with VRA’s social responsibility objective of ensuring sustainable livelihoods while protecting the river ecosystem, noting that sustainability remains a key guiding principle.
Hon John Atter Matey (MCE), in his speech indicated that the project was initiated upon the request of the Assembly soliciting funds from VRA, for which they have honored. He outlined the benefits of the fish market, which includes hygienic handling of fish produce, a safer and organized trading environment and structured economic activities to boost local revenue. He promised to provide street light and wash room to complement the fish market. The MCE further stated that government is implementing several interventions to support fisher folks nationwide, including the development of market infrastructure. He announced plans to establish a 24-hour economy market at Kpong and expressed profound gratitude to VRA for their continued collaboration and support.
The Chief of Kpong in his closing remarks expressed appreciation to VRA and the Municipal Assembly for the project and charged the community to take collective responsibility in safeguarding the facility. He appealed for the labelling of shelves and stalls for proper organization, and the construction of the access road leading to the market to enhance mobility and patronage.
The commissioning of the Kpong Wharf Fish Market marks a significant milestone in improving local economic activities and strengthening livelihoods among fisher folks. The collaborative effort demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainable development and social welfare. The community expressed optimism that the project will boost local commerce and improve living standards.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders, traditional authorities, government representatives, and community members.

LOWER MANYA KROBO MUNICIPALITY MARKS WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY

Department of Social Welfare and Community Development in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, celebrated ‘White Cane Safety Day’ at the Municipal Assembly Conference Hall. The event was held on the theme: “White Cane, Symbol of Independence and Pride.”
White Cane Safety Day is a national observance dedicated to celebrating the achievements of persons who are blind or visually impaired, while highlighting the white cane as a vital tool for safety, independence, and mobility.
In her opening remarks, the Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mrs. Grace Awatey, highlighted the significance of the white cane in enhancing the independence and safety of visually impaired persons. She emphasized that the Ghanaian constitution safeguards the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, and urged families and communities to uphold these protections. She added that persons with visual impairment are integral members of society and must be encouraged to pursue their aspirations without fear or limitation.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. John Atter Matey, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting people with disability within the Municipality. He stressed that none of these people should be isolated, hidden, or denied participation in any community engagement.
He called on families of the visually impaired relatives not to keep them indoors but rather encourage them to join the associations and benefit from social support program given to them by the government.
Mr. Solomon Nartey a visually impaired person sharing his personal stories indicated that he was blind from birth and lost his parents when he was in primary Three but by the grace of God and perseverance he is a teacher by profession. He advise his colleagues that disability is not inability. His testimonies provided motivation and reassurance to others facing similar challenges.
Mr. Enock Tettey another visually impaired in his delivery also educated parents and guardians present on some common causes of blindness, including complications from unprescribed abortion drugs, untreated gonorrhea, and diabetes among others. He asked them to continually engage their wards not to indulge in this practice to avoid this unfortunate situation.
As part of the celebration, items including white canes and electronic wristwatches were distributed to the visually impaired to enhance their mobility and daily living.
The program brought together several dignitaries and stakeholders, including the MCE, staff of the Social Welfare and Community Development Department, a representative from the Regional Office of the Visually Impaired, religious leaders, and staff of the Municipal Assembly.
The event ended with a renewed call for inclusivity, dignity, and equal opportunity for all persons living with visual impairment in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.

COMMISSIONING OF THE TSLEDOM CHPS COMPOUND

A colourful ceremony was held on Monday, November 3, 2025, to officially commission the newly constructed Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound at Tsledom. The facility, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), marks a significant milestone in improving access to primary healthcare services within the Tsledom community and its surrounding areas.
Dr. James Avoka, in his presentation, elaborated on the purpose of the gathering, emphasizing that the event was to officially open and hand over the newly constructed CHPS Compound to the Tsledom community. He noted that the facility would greatly enhance access to basic healthcare, reduce travel time to distant hospitals, and contribute to improving maternal and child health outcomes. Dr. Avoka expressed gratitude to JICA for their support and generosity, describing the project as a gift that will save lives. He further urged community members to take good care of the facility, ensuring that it remains functional and beneficial for generations to come.
The Regional Director of Health commended the project and highlighted the importance of maintaining such community health infrastructure. He appealed to the local community to treat health staff posted to the facility with respect and cooperation, ensuring a cordial working environment. He described the Tsledom CHPS Compound as a beacon of hope that reflects the shared commitment to the common goal of quality healthcare for all.
The Municipal Chief Executive expressed his excitement at the successful completion of the project, which began in March 2024. He stated that the government remains committed to bringing development to the doorstep of the people, especially in underserved areas. He emphasized that the facility would benefit the aged, children, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) within the community and its environs. The MCE expressed appreciation to the contractor for the quality of work delivered and to the Municipal Health Directorate for their dedication and supervision throughout the project period.
The Member of Parliament in his remarks expressed heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Caesar, the lead person who tirelessly advocated and facilitated the realization of the Tsledom CHPS project. He urged the community to take ownership of the facility and consider it their bona fide property, maintaining it for long-term benefit. He further noted that Mr. Caesar has been instrumental in establishing six (6) sickbays within the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal schools and in the provision of a borehole to the Tsledom community demonstrating his ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of his people.
Representatives from the Japan Embassy and JICA reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s healthcare delivery system as part of their corporate social responsibility and bilateral development cooperation. They emphasized that Japan’s development assistance is focused on empowering local communities and improving the quality of life of people in need.
The Divisional Chief of Dorm, Nene Baah, in his address expressed appreciation to JICA and all partners involved in bringing the project to fruition. He assured the gathering of the community’s full cooperation in ensuring that the facility is well maintained and effectively utilized.
The commissioning of the Tsledom CHPS Compound stands as a symbol of partnership, development, and hope for the people of Tsledom and its surrounding communities. The facility is expected to improve access to healthcare, reduce preventable diseases, and contribute to achieving Ghana’s universal health coverage goals. The ceremony ended on a joyous note, with community members expressing their appreciation through poetry, dancing, and singing.
The event brought together several dignitaries, traditional leaders, government officials, and representatives from JICA and the Ghana Health Service to celebrate this important achievement.

Inauguration of District Spatial Planning Committees

Five districts namely Okreh, Lower Manya, Yilo Krobo, Upper Manya and Asuogyaman District Spatial Planning Committees and its Technical Sub Committees were successfully inaugurated on 7th November, 2025 at the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly’s Conference Hall by the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey.
The Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjie in her address emphasized the importance of the committees’ work, highlighting the need for guidance on land use, housing, and other development issues.
Hon. Rita Akosua Awatey also stressed the need for collaboration between the Regional Coordinating Council and the districts to achieve smarter cities in the region. She outlined some underlining principles to guide the work of the committees, including participatory planning, transparency, resilient planning, and aligning district spatial planning with regional spatial planning.

Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly’s General Assembly Meeting

The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly’s General Assembly meeting on 7th November, 2025, provided a platform for stakeholders to come together and discuss key development issues and progress in the Municipality. The meeting also highlighted notable achievement and challenges and set the stage for future development initiatives.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) John Atter Martey addressed the assembly, highlighted key events that occurred in the past months within the Municipality, He mentioned the commissioning of Kyeredorm Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound, commissioning of Fish Market at Kpong constructed with funding support from Volta River Authority (VRA), and acquisition of litigation-free land for the construction of a modern 24-hour economy market at Kpong. The MCE also mentioned the donation of motorbikes to the health directorate, the Member of Parliament’s support to needy first-year SHS students, and a petition he received regarding the abandoned Somanya to Kpong road.
Hon. John Atter Martey stated the outcome of the Assembly’s Depart assessment, noting that 21 out of 33 Assemblies in the region passed the assessment including Lower Manya, as a result an amount of about Ten million (GH₵10,000000.00) Ghana Cedis was allocated to support development in the Municipality.
The MCE presented recommendations from the Executive Committee of the Assembly for consideration, including allowances review for Assembly sitting, assistance in roofing the Akuse Islamic school, and utilization of DRIP machines to improve deplorable roads in Akuse electoral areas just to mention a few.
In his closing remarks, Hon. John Atter Martey noted that the Assembly has made some notable achievement, however there is still much work to be done to address the challenges facing the Municipality. He assured all stakeholders that the Assembly’s commitment to transparency and accountability will be crucial in ensuring that its plans are implemented effectively for the benefit of the people of Lower Manya Krobo.
